Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
