Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural management.
